Hi, I'm Ivy Wang.

A Digital Product Designer & A Data Storyteller

Here is my story

8years

After dedicating eight years to full-time work as a Digital Product User Experience Designer in both Canada and the US, I’ve cultivated a deep passion and curiosity for data visualization. I recently completed my MA in Design for Data Visualization at UAL LCC, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in my career.

According to 2021 OECD data, less than 16% of graduate students in the UK are in their 30s. As part of this statistical minority, my journey as a mature MA student at LCC has been both enriching and unique. Embracing this distinction, I bring a wealth of life experience and a fresh perspective to my studies. With a clear goal in mind, I am committed to making the most of this program to advance both my academic and professional aspirations.

Joining the data visualization family at LCC marked the beginning of an exciting and transformative journey for me. My goal was to approach the experience with an open mind and insatiable curiosity, eager to embrace new ideas and perspectives. I committed to starting from scratch, giving myself the freedom to explore and learn without preconceptions. Facing each challenge head-on, I discovered that every obstacle was an opportunity for growth and deeper understanding.

These principles have emerged as the top three takeaways from my coursework and projects, shaping my approach and mindset as a data visualization practitioner:

3principles

  1. Embrace Complexity: Engage with the intricacies of data and design, recognizing that complexity often leads to deeper insights and innovative solutions.
  2. Acknowledge Subjectivity: While accepting my own subjective perspective, I remain mindful of its influence, striving to maintain objectivity in analysis and decision-making.
  3. Invent Beauty: Explore inventive visual language to harness the power of aesthetics as a tool for clarity, engagement, and excellence in presenting data and telling human stories.

In a healthy society, it's imperative not to assign blame to individuals who lack viable alternatives. This data story explores the multifaceted reasons contributing to the Philippines' plastic problem. As I delved deeper into this subject, I was struck by the intricate nature of the issue. It became clear that the problem couldn't be attributed solely to one or two factors; rather, it potentially stemmed from a multitude of influences. To thoroughly understand the issue, I collected and analyzed 25 diverse datasets encompassing both quantitative and qualitative data. These datasets were meticulously scrutinized and eventually synthesized into a comprehensive data story.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the IMF's establishment, this data visualization project aims to showcase its lending activities over the past eight decades to member countries. As a cohesive team, we navigated the specific requirements set forth by the IMF, forming a close and efficient feedback loop to ensure alignment with their expectations.

Leveraging Figma as our primary tool and drawing upon our expertise in front-end development, we successfully crafted an immersive interactive map. Our pride stems from delivering an outcome that aligns with the capabilities of the IMF's development team. Through four iterative feedback loops, we refined the data story to a state of mutual satisfaction, ensuring its effectiveness and impact.

From a team project to a personal exploration, this work visualizes sounds collected from a city park during the daytime. It showcases an exploration of how modern, human-made sounds travel, incorporating typography, maps, and sounds into a highly conceptual and experimental piece. So far, 13 sound maps have been created, which can be viewed separately or combined into a single comprehensive map.

A multimedia installation incorporating plywood, burned matches, video projection, and dance performance.

610 The Matches

This installation presents 610 matches arranged on a white surface, representing five data stories of individuals impacted by intersectional discrimination and inequality. Yet, the core of the project explores the voices and data that are missing – the unseen nuances and complex realities behind these stories, which may only hint at a much larger issue.

Through video projection capturing the burning process and the dance performance, the piece reflects the stories and the silenced voices within them. These elements together add multiple layers of meaning, bringing to light the intricate challenges of intersectionality and the vast, unspoken narratives beyond the visible.
